  • A candlelight vigil in Marinova's memory is organised for Monday evening in Sofia

Global bodies charged with the safety of journalists around the world have condemned the murder of Marinova as The Committee to Protect Journalists called on Bulgarian authorities to conduct a "rigorous, thorough investigation" into the killing.

Bulgaria's government said there was no evidence the killing was linked to Marinova's journalism for local television station TVN, "but her death has drawn worldwide condemnation and press freedom campaigners have expressed fears of a cover-up", says The Independent.

Bulgaria's chief prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov named the suspect as Severin Krasimirov, born in 1997, and said he was already sought in connection with another rape and murder.

A spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry told CNN the 21-year-old suspect had been arrested close to the northern German city of Hamburg.

"The shocking news about the murder of Victoria Marinova, an investigative journalist, seemingly linked to her reports on investigations into alleged corruption involving European Union funds, urges us to take immediate action at all levels and with all legal means", Moraes wrote.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said, "I am convinced it is a matter of time before the murder would be revealed".

Her death comes after Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed by a vehicle bomb in Malta in October 2017, and reporter Ján Kuciak was shot dead at his home in Slovakia in February this year. "Again a courageous journalist falls in the fight for truth and against corruption", he tweeted Sunday, not long after the news of the murder broke.

The journalist, who now fears for his own safety, described Ms Mainova as "extremely disciplined, ambitious" and said she was a "a person with an extreme sense of justice".

She presented a current affairs talk programme called "Detector" for Ruse's small private TVN television. "We can not downplay any possibility and any version, but if you are investigating the killing, you are looking for a motive", he said.

A veteran TV reporter, Marinova for many years hosted a lifestyle show and also served as a member of the management team of TVN. One of them, Kristina Petkov said Bulgarians had "zero" trust in authorities. However, Marinova recently interviewed two Romanian journalists who were investigating politicians and businessmen for alleged corruption of European Union funds.

Authorities discovered the body of Viktoria Marinova (30) on Saturday in the town of Ruse near the Romanian border. "None of them true", he told the news conference.

Ms Marinova is the third high-profile journalist to be killed in the European Union in the past year, and the fourth since the start of 2017. The Paris-based group called corruption and collusion between media, politicians, and oligarchs "widespread".

Recent events have led to a growing sense of crisis about freedom of the press in Europe.

Local people held a candlelight vigil October 8 and many left flowers to commemorate Marinova, who left a seven-year-old daughter.

Worldwide, at least 48 journalists have been killed doing their work in 2018, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, an advocacy group that does an annual count of detained and killed journalists.
