  • US First Lady Melania Trump's visit to Africa has included stops in Ghana and Malawi

Melania Trump on Tuesday arrived in Accra, Ghana on the first stop of the African tour of Malawi, Kenya, and Egypt.

USA first lady Melania Trump looks on as she visits a school in Lilongwe, Malawi, October 4, 2018.

Trump greeted two administrators as she arrived at the school with Virginia Palmer, the US ambassador to Malawi. After recovering her confidence she approached again to give a young orphan a lengthy pat, apparently absorbed by the texture of its ear.

Mrs Trump has started her trip by visiting the orphans elephant rescue centre, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where pictures have emerged of her meeting a baby elephant dressed in a white shirt and khaki pants.

On the second day of her visit to Ghana, Mrs Trump visited Cape Coast, the Central regional capital, where she met and interacted briefly with the chief, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II and his elders, before taking a private tour of the former slave fort called Cape Coast Castle.

On Friday the first ladies will visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust before heading to State House for talks and later to the Kenya National Theatre where they will be treated to cultural performances.

During Trump's tour, she is focusing on child welfare.

Mrs. Trump received a joyous welcome upon her arrival at Kamuzu International Airport, with singing and dancing by a troupe of women and scores of schoolchildren waving flags.

"She's shining a light on some of the great things the United States is doing in Malawi and Africa".

"I wanted to be here to see the successful programs that [the] United States is providing the children, and thank you for everything you've done", Trump said.

But a few signs of protest were afoot, too, as President Trump is not widely seen as a friend of Africa.

"I was heartened to spend time with the students and was honoured to donate school supplies and soccer balls".

Llamas, who is weekend anchor of "World News Tonight", is among the reporters following the first lady on her first solo overseas trip.
