Key Republicans criticise Trump for 'appalling' mockery of Kavanaugh accuser

  • United States President Donald J. Trump speaks with members of the media prior to boarding Marine One for his departure from the White House

It was not immediately clear whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation report, which will be made available to senators, would be released to the public.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday openly mocked the university professor who has accused his Supreme Court nominee of sexual assault, joking about her inability to remember details surrounding the night of the alleged attack. (According to the report, Kavanaguh "did not want to say if he threw the ice or not.") UB40 have now responded to the news saying the band, like most people, wants nothing to do with this Brett Kavanaugh mess.

Other women have also come forward with allegations against Kavanaugh, including Deborah Ramirez, who told The New Yorker that she remembers Kavanaugh exposing himself to her at a dormitory party.

As far as the White House is concerned, the report should end the firestorm around Kavanaugh's confirmation, which is set to go to a procedural Senate vote Friday-a so-called "cloture" vote created to limit debate.

The investigation was launched in the wake of a string of allegations levelled against Kavanaugh as the Senate Judiciary Committee deliberated on his confirmation. He has described Ms Swetnick's allegation as a "joke".

As the Senate Judiciary Committee vote is now on pause pending an FBI investigation into Kavanaugh, this is probably the worst thing Trump could have done to help his case. Sen.

Even Trump ally Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said at an event hosted by The Atlantic magazine: "I would tell him, knock it off".

The report will be in paper format only and no copies will be made. Senators are not supposed to divulge the contents of the agency's background reports.

Committee chairman Chuck Grassley will see it at 08:00 local time (12:00 GMT) and ranking Democrat Diane Feinstein will see it at 09:00, NBC reported.

Meanwhile, Democrats and a few Republicans had raised concerns over the amount of freedom granted to U.S. federal investigative agency to conduct a lightning-fast probe in a decades old high-level case.

The interviews are not expected to be made public, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn told reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

He was, she said, so drunk that he was unable to remove her clothing.

The FBI did not include any conclusions as to whether Ford or Kavanaugh was telling the truth.

Senators delayed a vote on Kavanaugh so the FBI could conduct a background investigation into the allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

The FBI inquiry began last week at the direction of the White House after Republican Sen. "With this additional information, the White House is fully confident the Senate will vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court".

She said both Prof Ford and Mr Kavanaugh had already been questioned "in the most public way possible". This will allow Republicans to follow through on McConnell's repeated pledge to hold Kavanaugh's final confirmation vote later this week.

The party has only a 51-49 Senate majority. "The president's comments yesterday mocking Dr. Ford were wholly inappropriate and, in my view, unacceptable".

"I just say it's kind of appalling."
Democratic senators Heidi Heitkamp and Joe Manchin remain undecided. He is a fine man and great intellect.

He said Kavanaugh - who has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia for 12 years and worked in the George W. Bush White House before that - clearly fits that description.

The National Council of Churches said in a statement that he had shown "extreme partisan bias" during his testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee, and lacked the temperament to be a Supreme Court judge.
