Former UK FM Johnson slams PM May's Brexit plan, calls strategy 'dangerous'

He also criticised Jacob Rees-Mogg for pledging financial security in Britain after Brexit at the same time as opening an investment fund in Ireland to transfer his money over.

With six months to go until Britain leaves the European Union on March 29, the EU is seeking new proposals from Britain, and May is sticking to her plan, bringing negotiations to a standstill.

Britain has an aid budget at 0.7 percent of economic output and the target has previously come under fire from lawmakers who say it is a blunt tool that is too high and should be spent in Britain itself.

Johnson's speech was a leadership pitch in all but name, and many Conservatives expect May to face a party coup soon after Brexit day - or even before, if there is no progress toward a deal.

Just six months before Britain leaves on March 29, negotiations with the European Union have ground to a halt and May is caught between Brexiteers like Johnson and those who want to keep close economic ties with the bloc, Britain's biggest trading partner.

When asked once what was the naughtiest thing she had ever done, May admitted to running through fields of wheat as a child.

The Channel 4 reporter sought to remind Mr Johnson that there was indeed a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic; "Well we know for many decades it was a very troublesome area", she said.

He said: "Building a bridge between mainland Britain and Ireland, the latest intervention of Boris Johnson, who normally burns bridges instead of building them".

Speaking on the fringe of the conference, the former foreign secretary - who quit Mrs May's Cabinet in July in protest at the Chequers plan - won an enthusiastic reaction on a scale not seen so far inside the main hall. She's a hard Brexit backer and believes, like Mr. Johnson, that Ms.

He denied critics of the PM's Brexit strategy were destabilising the party, saying: "The Chequers plan is destabilising the party".

Responding to Johnson's claims she doesn't believe in Brexit, Mrs May suggested her Chequers plan is the only option that will "get a really good" deal with the EU.

"The previous time he was insulting his wife, but this time it's something far more different: he's insulting not us, but millions of ordinary citizens who have lived under Soviet rule for so long".

This similarity was picked up by a cabinet minister who told The Sun that Johnson has been sounding more like Trump since he had a meeting with the USA president's ally Steve Bannon.

Setting out an alternative policy platform as the Conservative Party conference began in Birmingham, the former cabinet minister said: "I think we need to make the case for markets".

Michael Edwards from Hastings, a Tory member for 40 years, said Johnson gave an "inspiring speech".

Ms. May has held back on criticizing Mr. Johnson, but on Tuesday, she said his speech had made her "cross".

"We Conservatives know that it is only a strong private sector economy that can pay for superb public services and that is the central symmetry of our one nation Toryism". "I believe we can get a good deal and that's what we are working for".

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Mr Johnson said the United Kingdom should build a bridge to Ireland and put the HS2 rail line on hold to focus on a high-speed link in the north of England.

Chequers was, he said, "not what we voted for" and a recipe for "continued acrimony" as it would encourage calls for another vote, something which would be "disastrous for trust in politics".

"This is a plan which ensures we deliver on the vote of the British people".
