McConnell Vows Quick Vote on Court Nominee Kavanaugh

  • A lawyer for Deborah Ramirez the second woman who accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault might not testify before Congress

Kavanaugh may drop out himself, while his nomination could also be pulled by the White House or not accepted by the nomination committee.

As the risk that Kavanaugh's nomination could collapse has mounted - a new allegation of sexual misconduct published by The New Yorker on Sunday night raised fresh questions about whether he could survive - Trump has been forced into the role of spectator. In order to be appointed to the Supreme Court, Kavanaugh's nomination must be confirmed by the US Senate, which the Republican Party narrowly controls 51-49.

Kavanaugh's approval was only two weeks ago considered a done deal, with all Republicans in the narrowly divided Senate appearing set to back him.

But Kavanaugh, a 53-year-old judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, apparently believed the charges against him required an unprecedented defense, and he responded Monday with the interview and a fierce letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa).

MacCallum then followed up on Kavanaugh's assertion.

The first woman to come forward with accusations against Kavanaugh, Christine Blasey Ford, told the Senate Judiciary Committee she was telling "the truth" in claiming a drunken Kavanaugh tried to undress her and that she had feared for her life during a high school party.

"I am not questioning and have not questioned that perhaps Dr. Ford at some point in her life was sexually assaulted by someone at some place, but what I know is I've never sexually assaulted anyone", Kavanaugh said in the Fox News interview. "My lifelong record of promoting dignity and equality for women starting with the women who knew me when I was 14 years old". "Yes, people might have had too many beers on occasion". But the judge said he never drank so much that he could not recall what happened while he was intoxicated.

A second accusation came out this past weekend, September 23, through The New Yorker.

The Republican strategy was the most vigorous effort yet to put the damaging accusations of sexual assault into the framework of a partisan brawl before the lights go on in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing room Thursday.

When McCallum brought up the claim by attorney Michael Avenatti -most recently seen on CNN representing adult actress Stormy Daniels in a lawsuit against Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen- that Kavanaugh was involved in setting up "rape trains" at high school parties, the federal judge was shocked, revealing that he was a virgin in high school and "for many years thereafter". I'm not going to let false accusations drive me out of this process.

Additionally, crude stocks at the Cushing, Oklahoma, futures delivery hub fell 1.25 million barrels, EIA data showed. Specifically, helping to underpin prices is another drawdown in USA inventories and strong US gasoline demand.

It is unheard of for a Supreme Court nominee to give interviews during the confirmation process.

"If you're not familiar with what Supreme Court nominees normally do, this is not what they normally do", HuffPost senior reporter Jeffrey Young‏ tweeted.

Some questioned the appropriateness of a Supreme Court nominee appearing on a right-leaning network. "Or customary morning show interview?"

Kavanaugh said he was "focused on trying to be number one in my class and captain of the varsity football team and going to church".

"There's a huge difference between Sotomayor on Sesame Street or Scalia on 60 Minutes and this, of course".

The #BelieveSurvivors walkout on Monday was initially planned after Ford's allegation against Kavanaugh was known publicly.

Female interviewer, check. Fox News, check. Bill Shine approved, check.

Margaret Sullivan, the influential media columnist of the Washington Post, lamented on Twitter before the interview was aired that it "promises to be a challenge-free infomercial".

Brett Kavanaugh's accusers have claimed he sexually assaulted them. Ailes was ultimately pushed out of the network over the allegations.

"I also ask that the newest allegations of sexual misconduct be referred to the FBI for investigation, and that you join our request for the White House to direct the FBI to investigate the allegations of Christine Blasey Ford as well as these new claims".
