Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) on Saturday went after Christine Blasey Ford's sexual assault accusation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, calling her story an attempt at "character assassination".

"Dr. Ford accepts the Committee's request to provide her first-hand knowledge of Brett Kavanaugh's sexual misconduct next week", says the letter, which is signed by Ford's lawyers Lisa Banks and Debra Katz.

The White House is casting doubt on the willingness of a college professor to speak publicly about her sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

The Senate Judiciary Committee released a letter it sent to Ford's attorneys on Friday in which it accepted some of their demands, including that Kavanaugh not be in the room when she testifies.

Feinstein also linked to a statement in which she blasted Republicans for their insistence (at the time) on holding a hearing with Ford on Monday as scheduled: "I'm shocked and appalled by the Republicans' refusal to wait 24 hours for a hearing". Ford alleges that at a 1982 house party, Kavanaugh, then 17 and "stumbling drunk", pinned her to a bed and groped her, leaving her fearful for her life before she escaped.

Republicans viewed Ford's requests as a way to delay voting on President Donald Trump's nominee. I want to hear her. "You know, when you take a look at this in honest terms, I believe that not only Judge Kavanaugh, but certainly Dr. Ford deserves a fair hearing".

Republicans grew frustrated as Ms Ford's lawyers insisted on a hearing next Thursday rather than Monday or even Wednesday and made other requests, some of which the committee chairman, Senator Chuck Grassley rejected.

Trump and the White House had been careful not to malign Ford after her allegations surfaced, but Trump dropped the restraint in his tweets on Friday.

She has reached a tentative agreement to testify about her experience before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

Trump says ‘hard’ to imagine Kavanaugh did wrong
Kavanaugh denies the charge and will apparently tell his side of the story before the Senate Judiciary Committee next Monday. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., said she believes Ford and stressed that she had "nothing to gain" by stepping forward.

"I did not ask to be involved in this matter nor did anyone asked me to be involved", Judge said in a written statement forwarded to the committee by his attorney.

The agreement capped a week of dramatic developments that cast into turmoil U.S. Senate confirmation of President Donald Trump's conservative nominee, once considered a safe bet.

In backing away from his deadline, Grassley underscored the sensitivity with which Senate Republicans have tried handling Ford.

Earlier Saturday amid the latest deadline standoff Vice President Mike Pence called Kavanaugh "a man of integrity with impeccable credentials".

The committee asked the friend if she would agree to have a confidential phone call with minority and majority staff so she could be asked about the allegations against Kavanaugh, according to an email exchange obtained by USA TODAY.

On Friday, Grassley turned down Ford's request that only senators, not attorneys, be allowed to ask questions.

Ford also identified another Georgetown Prep student by his initials "PJ", and later Patrick J. Smyth, a fellow 1983 grad of the North Bethesda, Maryland all-boys school, came forward to respond to Ford's charge.

Republicans will be forced to walk a careful line in questioning Ford's account without alienating female voters before the November congressional elections. A Facebook post promoting the rally said that "New York City stands with Dr. Blasey Ford and all sexual assault survivors". Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said of Christine Blasey Ford to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos on "This Week" Sunday.
