Amazon's voice-activated assistant Alexa has a significant presence in consumers' homes, thanks to the robust ecosystem of developers and manufacturers who are incorporating Alexa into their devices.

The CNBC report also suggests that Amazon could eventually use its Alexa-equipped smart home devices as an in with home builders. Sonos has an Alexa-compatible amplifier and subwoofer, while GE has a microwave that can be connected to Alexa. The company is expected to show them off at an event this month, CNBC goes on to note, according to an internal Amazon document.

Amazon is already grabbing a certain share of the smart speaker market with a few Echo-branded devices.

Alexa is already linked up with several devices in the smart home market, ranging from voice-controlled thermostats, coffee makers, light bulbs and many more items.

'Aspirin-a-day risky in old age' - major study
The small increase in deaths, mostly from cancer, may be coincidental and needs more study, the authors said. Heart disease and stroke accounted for 19 per cent of the deaths and major bleeding for five per cent.

The new lineup will also pit Amazon against other companies that make Alexa-powered devices. The more in-house products and partnerships Amazon can score for Alexa, the better. The microwave can make Alexa a key part of the kitchen.

All of the rumored devices would have Alexa built in, or have easy access to the virtual assistant (likely over an Internet connection).

It's unclear if the new devices will consist exclusively of collaborations between Amazon and other tech manufacturers, or if all of the devices will be made and sold by Amazon.

Amazon is also reported to be working on a secretive home robot. Sonos, for example, has a similar business model, as it said in its quarterly filing that it relies on "custom installers of home audio systems for a significant portion of our sale". And in its most recent earnings report, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos hinted at his ambition for making Alexa more widely used. With eight new Alexa-enabled devices, the company is working along that goal.
