  • From 1,042 to US Open final del Potro relishes return to Grand Slam title match

Things started so well for Del Potro, the Argentine looking for a second US Open title following his maiden, and to date only, grand slam win back in 2009.

On Sunday September 9, Novak Djokovic won the US Open for the third time in his career - after his titles in 2011 and 2015 - with victory over Argentinian player Juan Martin del Potro in three sets 6-3 7-6 6-3.

But to truly appreciate their dominance, consider this stat: Since the 2003 Wimbledon Championships, 62 Grand Slams have been played, and 51 were won by Federer (20), Nadal (17), or Djokovic (14).

It was Djokovic's 15th win over the Argentine and fifth in five at the Slams.

Former world number one Djokovic equalled Pete Sampras' haul of 14 slams after outlasting Del Potro 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 to lift the trophy for a third time in NY.

ESPN drew the joint second-highest TV audience they have ever had for the US Open for her final loss to Naomi Osaka, tied with the final between Djokovic and Roger Federer in 2015.

"I think it's time to take a break, to see how my body feels for the future, and then be ready for the next one". One game alone in the second set lasted 20 minutes. Later on, when an upset del Potro sat on his bench awaiting the award ceremony, Djokovic went over to hug him and have a word.

"Maybe 10 years ago I would say I'm not so happy to be part of this era with Nadal and Federer", he stated. The US Open winners have been crowned.

In New York, while some of his fiercest rivals fell by the wayside over a bruis- ing fortnight, Djokovic did not let the intense heat or any of his opponents push him off his path to a third title at Flushing Meadows.

Hurricane Florence could wreak havoc on college football's Week 3
Florence is still on track to make a late Thursday landfall somewhere between Charleston, South Carolina and the Outter Banks. State officials say 245,000 people live in the affected area, but officials warned the storm could affect the entire state.

No. 1 Simona Halep retained the top spot even though she became the first No. 1 seed to lose in the first round of the U.S. Open, and Caroline Wozniacki stayed at No. 2 after her second-round exit.

It made for a partisan atmosphere in the biggest tennis stadium in the world and, with the roof closed because of rain, led to a cauldron of noise.

At a photo shoot in Manhattan on Sunday, a "very tired" Osaka continued to field questions about the contentious match, in which Williams drew her third penalty with an angry outburst at chair umpire Carlos Ramos, costing her a game when she stood just two games from defeat.

"I was playing at my limit nearly all the time, looking for winners", he said.

"I took the risks with my forehand because it was the only way to beat this kind of player".

This time previous year Djokovic was injured and uncertain about his future direction.

Despite defeat, world number three Del Potro remained proud after an achievement he never thought would have been possible during his injury hell.

Since his June trek with his wife up Mont Sainte-Victoire, the mountain that famously also served as an inspiration for Paul Cezanne, the 31-year-old has added a pair of Grand Slam titles to his resume.
