NYT columnist: Woodward's book will have a 'decisive effect' on midterms

US President Donald Trump almost provoked North Korea into war with a single tweet, renowned journalist Bob Woodward said in an interview with "CBS Sunday Morning" that aired Sunday. "The incidents are not anonymous, it gives a date, it gives a time, who participates, most often the president himself and what he says". He is certainly the best known and, since his role in the expose of Richard Nixon and the Watergate cover-up in the early 1970s, in Washington he is also one of the most feared.

Woodward said of the president, "There's a war on truth by him".

"The Woodward book is a Joke - just another assault against me, in a barrage of assaults, using now disproven unnamed and anonymous sources", Trump wrote on his Twitter account.

"To the President's point, there could be a national security risk at hand; he doesn't want this person in a meeting where he's discussing China, Russia, North Korea", Conway told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union".

Many scenes in Fear are recounted in direct quotes, and seem to communicate the experiences of among others former chief of staff Reince Priebus, former White House strategist Steve Bannon, former staff secretary Rob Porter and former chief economic adviser Gary Cohn.

Woodward told Guthrie today that the sources he quotes who are denying their words are now "not telling the truth".

Trump's White House is reeling from Bob Woodward's well-sourced book detailing dysfunction and the brink of emergency in his administration.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Trump "has every right to be upset" with the piece and that he would be angry if he were the subject of an anonymous attack. Many have already come forward to say the quotes by them, like the book, are fiction.

Former Republican Sen. Kyl to replace McCain, bolstering conservatives
Once Kyl is sworn in, Republicans will return to the 51 seats they held in the 100-member Senate before McCain's death. Woods could encounter difficulties in a Democratic primary, given his long-standing ties to the Republican Party.

'Dems can't stand losing.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell referred to the accomplishments of the current Congress when asked about the op-ed during an interview on Fox News. He accused the media of trying to undermine the Trump administration and said he found that "incredibly disturbing".

The stunning confession of a "resistance inside the Trump administration" drew swift rebukes from the White House, Trump's supporters on Capitol Hill and some members of previous administrations.

"It's an absolutely outrageous statement, you're serving your country", he said, arguing that the anonymous official should resign rather than taking the "cowardly" action of writing the op-ed.

That's a big deal - especially because it confirms much of the daily reporting that has come out of this White House since Trump became President 19 months ago.

In a statement, Kelly flatly disputed maligning the president like that: "The idea I ever called the President an idiot is not true, in fact it's exactly the opposite".

The essay said members of the administration were running a "two-track presidency", achieving Republican policy aims while sidelining the "amoral ... impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective" Trump until he was out of office.
