Trump expects letter from North Korea's Kim

North Korea first staged its mass games in 2002, when Kim's father, Kim Jong Il, was the country's leader.

The Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim and his entourage including his right-hand man Choe Ryoung-hae visited the Kumsusan Palace of Sun.

"It is a day Kim Jong Un should reminisce the past 70 years of the republic, and it is an event where he has the pressure to offer a long-term statecraft vision that looks into more than 10 years that follow", said Hong Min, senior researcher of Korea Institute for National Unification.

A separate account by North Korean state media said Kim told the delegation that he wanted progress on denuclearization, without mentioning the USA or Trump.

News of the comment brought a statement of thanks from Trump on Twitter.

US officials involved in the latest negotiations have said North Korea has refused to even start discussions about defining denuclearisation or other key terms such as "verifiable" and "irreversible", and has insisted the United States must first agree to simultaneous steps to reduce economic pressure. Pyongyang sees the performances, last held in 2013, as one of its most highly effective forms of propaganda, highlighting its social and political agenda both at home, where it will be televised repeatedly for months to come, and overseas. If he shows a new ICBM during Sunday's parade, it would likely further complicate relations with the United States amid a stalemate over nuclear diplomacy. "I say it a hundred times-no missiles, no rockets, no nuclear testing". They are believed to be those of American soldiers who died in the Korean War.

Thousands of North Koreans participate in the "Arirang" mass games in Pyongyang, North Korea. The Games are typically a grandiose mix of performance art and North Korean propaganda which reflect the values of unity and political will.

The summit could in turn provide renewed momentum to talks over denuclearlisation between North Korea and the United States, after Trump cancelled a visit to the North by his secretary of state last month citing a lack of progress.

Observers say the military parade could cast doubt on North Korea's sincerity about denuclearising and pausing its missiles programme.

Why Nike's Colin Kaepernick ad is dividing National Football League fans

But in his talks with envoys of South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday in Pyongyang, Kim voiced hope that denuclearisation of the peninsula will take place during Trump's current term in office through January 2021, according to Seoul. But negotiations have made little headway, while signs North Korea has maintained work on its weapons have emerged.

The military parade will be North Korea's first since February 8 this year, when the country celebrated the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People's Army.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un confirmed this week his "unequivocal commitment" to working with the United States and completely denuclearizing the region, reports Bloomberg.

He said, while China has listened to North Korea's concerns, the country has reduced trade with its neighbor and placed pressure on it.

And it's a case of "you've got mail" for U.S. President Donald Trump.

Chung, whose official title is presidential national security director, spoke with his US counterpart, John Bolton, on the phone on Thursday about his trip to North Korea. During his meeting with the South Korean envoys, Kim said an end-of-war declaration wouldn't weaken the U.S.

Kim committed to "complete" denuclearization during a historic meeting with Trump in June in Singapore. As it prepared for the celebrations, the government reportedly stopped issuing tourist visas, and North Korean authorities blocked Chinese tour groups from visiting, saying all the hotels in the capital were being renovated.

The newly announced summit between the Korean leaders would come just before the yearly gathering of world leaders at the United Nations in NY.

"What we want to offer is a future of a denuclearized peninsula".
