  • The shooter opened fire early in the morning at the loading dock of the Fifth Third Bank building

Police in OH say three people were killed when a gunman opened at Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati's Fountain Square on Thursday morning.

Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac said 911 calls on the shooting began to come in around 9:10 a.m. He died after being shot several times by police, Isaac said.

The situation in Cincinatti appeared to be under control shortly before 10am [14:00 GMT] on Thursday, but police said they were still investigating.

The Enquirer said some customers hid inside a bathroom at the bank, and one gunshot victim was found inside a nearby ice cream shop.

"So, he was actively shooting innocent victims and our officers were able to kill him and stop the threat quickly".

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said the rapid police response probably prevented many more casualties.

A witness told the Cincinnati Enquirer he heard as many as 15 gunshots during the morning incident. He saw a woman about to enter the bank and people shouted at her, he said, but she had headphones on.

One witness told FOX19 she heard about 20 shots before the store she was in was put on lockdown. Cincinnati.com reported that the scene is now secure but that there are multiple victims.

Xi said the financing would be in the form of government help as well as investment and funding by institutions and companies. Ramaphosa urged China to focus more on the nature of and quality of its investments in Africa and not just natural resources.

Police said the shooting took place at the beginning of the work day inside the Fifth Third Bank building, a 30-storey tower that sits above bustling Fountain Square a few blocks from Great American Ball Park and the riverfront along the Ohio River.

The Enquirer interviewed a person who said he saw a man firing a gun inside the bank lobby. It wasn't clear immediately if the shooter was one of them.

Mayor John Cranley praised police and other emergency personnel, saying, "the heroism of these officers was truly remarkable".

"This could have been a bloodbath beyond imagination", said Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters, CNN affiliate WLWT reported.

They have been identified as Pruthvi Raj Kandepi, 25, Richard Newcomer, 64, and Luis Felipe Calderón, 48. Thursday afternoon, the hospital shared an update that one patient had been upgraded to fair condition, while another was still in critical condition. Streets and sidewalks around Fountain Square were closed. "We didn't know where to go because we didn't have a backdoor", she told reporters.

Officials with Fifth Third bank released a statement in wake of the shooting, saying in part, "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone caught up in this awful event".

A coroner says she recognized the youngest person. The company in a statement said it's working with law enforcement and offers thoughts and prayers for "everyone caught up in this bad event".
