Hackers hijack 380,000 customers’ data from British Airways’ site

  • Customers who purchased tickets between August 21 through September 5

"No passport or travel details were stolen", British Airways said in a statement posted on its website.

"Please accept our deepest apologies for the worry and inconvenience that this criminal activity has caused".

British Airways tweeted yesterday: "We are investigating the theft of customer at a from our website and our mobile app as a matter of urgency".

The airline discovered on Wednesday that bookings made between August 21 and September 5 had been infiltrated in a "very sophisticated, malicious criminal" attack, BA Chairman and Chief Executive Alex Cruz said.

The company says its website is working properly now.

The airline has asked its customers to take advice from their banks or credit card providers on the matter if they believe they have been affected by this breach.

The recommendation does not apply to customers who bought tickets or changed reservations outside those times.

Well, that's not for BA to say, of course.

Facebook, Twitter Face US Congress Over Politics and the Internet
Trump faulted Twitter on July 26, without citing any evidence, for limiting the visibility of prominent Republicans through a practice known as shadow banning.

"Atrocious that I had to find out about this via news and twitter", he tweeted.

"One will be figuring out which cards have been compromised and alerting victims, whilst the other will be trying to abuse them while they are still fresh".

Meanwhile, BA customers expressed their frustration with the airline on social media.

A third party detected "unusual activity" and notified British Airways, Gizmodo reports, so there may be an independent report on the details in the future. "As airlines become ever more dependent on software, this creates a greater surface for hackers to attack and so it is no surprise that breaches of this scale are becoming commonplace".

He said any customers who lose out financially will be compensated by the airline.

The airline said the problem was down to an incident with an IT system.

BA apologised in July after technology issues caused dozens of its flights to and from London's Heathrow Airport to be cancelled.

The London-listed group, which is also the owner of Irish airline Aer Lingus and Spanish carrier Vueling, added that total revenues swelled three percent to 11.2 billion euros.
