Outside the hearing room at the Hart Senate Office Building, hundreds of women representing the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and other national groups wore shirts reading "I am what's at stake" linked arms to express solidarity against Kavanaugh's nomination.

Grassley is planning to talk broadly about the role of a judge and Kavanaugh's qualifications during his opening remarks, a source familiar with the remarks told CNN.

What were the protests about?

That is, frankly, also not normal for Democrats and their handling of Trump judicial nominees.

"More women are going to be sent to back-alley abortions!" one protester screamed as she was removed by police. Another cried: "Our democracy is broken!"

President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is sworn-in by committee chairman Sen.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa bridled at the suggestion he had lost control of the proceedings.

Opening statements are underway in the confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

The U.S. Justice Department tried to evade this question, but Judge Karen LeCraft Henderson of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia answered it correctly.

In total, the Democrats spoke out of turn and interrupted the hearing 63 times and complained about the withholding of documents 129 times, according to a tally kept by White House spokesperson Raj Shah.

Monday night, the committee received 42,000 pages of documents about Kavanaugh's years with the Bush administration, prompting complaints from Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.

Politico, citing unnamed sources, reported that during a Labor Day conference call, Democratic senators debated whether to walk out in protest of the Republican opposition to the release of millions of pages of missing Kavanaugh documents.

But Republican Senator Orrin Hatch dismissed the concerns raised about the judge as "ridiculous".

Kavanaugh also is likely to be questioned about his views on investigating sitting presidents and the probe by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and possible collusion between Moscow and Trump's 2016 campaign.

Why is the nomination contentious?

One of the big questions surrounding Kavanaugh is how he would vote on cases related to Roe vs. Wade. Kennedy retired at the end of July.

Republicans brushed aside complaints that Kavanaugh is too partisan and accused Democrats of stalling tactics.

Republicans hold a one-vote majority in the Senate. "Judge Kavanaugh is a decent man and should be confirmed". So far, there are no signs of Republican defections.

He said it turned the hearing into a 'charade'.

The authors back up their views with concomitant experience: They have "either been before the Senate for confirmation, worked on Supreme Court or other confirmations, or both". The court begins its next term in October.

But those on the left who want their senators to deploy more dramatic not-giving-Merrick Garland-a-hearing-level tactics should stay tuned.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the senior Democrat on the panel holding the Supreme Court confirmation hearings, said the White House was trying to "hide" Kavanaugh's records from the Senate and the public.

A resident of the wealthy Washington suburb of Chevy Chase, Mr Kavanaugh studied law at Yale. He was also part of the legal team that investigated then-President Bill Clinton in the late 1990s.

Under George W Bush, he served as deputy White House counsel and, from 2003-06, as Mr Bush's staff secretary.

It would require more auto parts to be made in North America, and to be made by workers earning at least $16 an hour. Second, it gives the United States top billing, which could be interpreted as an affront to Mexicans and Canadians.
