Bush paid tribute to his former rival John McCain at his funeral service Saturday at Washington National Cathedral.
Two ex-presidents from opposing parties united Saturday in homage to late senator and American patriot John McCain, in a momentous farewell ceremony that also rebuked the politics of toxicity and division trafficked by Donald Trump.
Additional tributes were given by former president George W. Bush, former US senator Joe Lieberman, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and daughter Meghan McCain.
Often fighting through tears, McCain called her father a "great warrior" but said she admired him most as a "great father".
Obama denounced a politics "that pretends to be fearless and tough, but in fact is born of fear". The president did not attend Saturday's service and spent the morning sending tweets on other subjects. "We never doubted that we were on the same team".
Mourners gathered at the Washington National Cathedral on Saturday to pay their final respects to Senator John McCain.
McCain lay in state in the Capitol on Friday.
It's hard to wrap my head around that fact that Meghan made the conscious decision to give the media, and basically the world, the opportunity to boil down her eulogy into a Trump smear rather than an ode to her father's lifelong legacy. McCain also ran for president twice, and was the Republican nominee in 2008.

Cindy Mc Cain prays for her late husband
He recognized McCain's disdain for the abuse of power and instinct to "stand up for the little guy".
McCain's daughter Meghan delivered a tribute that was both affectionate and defiant.
"The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great", she said to applause from an audience that included Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, the president's daughter and son-in-law. On Sunday, a private service will take place at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and then his body will be laid to rest in the US Naval Academy Cemetery.
"The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again, because America was always great", the former Fox News Channel co-host added to a very very warm and loud reception from the bipartisan crowd.
Held as a prisoner until 1973, McCain was tortured by his captors in a jail that Americans dubbed the "Hanoi Hilton".
It was first reported last July that the six-term Republican senator from Arizona was battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. "In a way, it's the last great gift that John McCain gave America".
It's no secret that there is little love lost between the McCains and President Donald Trump.
Bush praised McCain for standing up for the working-class Americans over the interests of Washington, D.C. Trump was not invited to McCain's memorial services, making the president's loyal VP the highest-ranking member of the White House present at the Capitol ceremony. Bush passed a piece of candy to Michelle Obama during John McCain's funeral service, And the Internet can't get enough.
