Trump Says Google Search Results Are 'Rigged' and Suppress Conservative Voices

  • President Donald Trump has accused Alphabet Inc.’s Google of rigging its search results against him

The announcement puts the search giant squarely in the White House's crosshairs amid wider allegations against the tech industry that it systematically discriminates against conservatives on social media and other platforms. The site used a classification that ranks nearly every mainstream news outlet - other than Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, the Economist, and DailyMail.com - as leftwing. Google News is a searchable news aggregator and app (with some overt editorial functions), whereas Google Search tries to give users the most useful and relevant information in response to a query.

"In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me and others, so that nearly all stories and news is BAD. And they have to be careful".

In a statement to Deadline, a Google spokesman repudiated the president's claims.

Google says it does not manipulate results and told PJ Media it uses more than 200 signals, such as freshness, in its search results. Regulators and users increasingly demand that Silicon Valley apply a heavier hand in moderating content that appears online to prevent harassment, stop hate speech and ensure civil political discourse.

Some of the president's allies responded with approval at his suggestion that social media companies be regulated, but others warned that that kind of government-centered control of the means of communication often ends with unanticipated negative consequences.

This was just the latest example of Trump making the case that social media and internet companies are biased against conservative voices, but there is little if no evidence that it is systematic.

Groeling added that there were particular challenges when it came to matters like search functions and algorithms.

In response, Twitter insisted it does not shadow ban accounts and said there was an "issue" where certain accounts did not show up in suggested search results, which they've worked to address. "People are very vulnerable on this".

"As you can see, CNN has a disproportionate number of articles returned when searching for "Trump" - almost 29 percent of the total", she wrote.

There has been nothing to corroborate the charge that Google is putting its thumb on the scales on the liberal side.

Ranked Halep crashes out of US Open first round
The new Louis Armstrong Stadium didn't need to wait long for the first surprise in its history. Kanepi overwhelmed her opponent with her raw power, hitting 26 winners to Halep's nine.

Under public pressure from Republicans, tech companies have been quick to apologize for the mishaps.

Google strongly rejected any bias claims. "'Treading on troubled territory.' 'You can't do that.' Do what to people?"

"It seems to be the news itself, because around there it's not good".

At the same time, however, Zuckerberg was adamant in his opposition to increased regulation of his company.

Soon, it will be Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey's turn.

"The real question behind the question is, 'Are we doing something according to political ideology or viewpoints?' And we are not". And we are not. Twitter denied the claim.

The two tech executives will speak to the Senate Intelligence Committee on September 5.

The issue is also of concern on Capitol Hill, where the House Energy and Commerce Committee, chaired by Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., recently announced that Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is scheduled to testify before the panel on September 5 about the platform's algorithms and content monitoring.
