Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey called McCain "an American hero" who always put his country before himself.

Tributes have been paid to Republican senator John McCain after he died at the age of 81 following a battle with brain cancer.

The decorated politician's family said they are "immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the previous year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John's many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers". On Saturday night, a black hearse accompanied by a police motorcade could be seen driving away from the ranch near Sedona where the Republican senator spent his final weeks.

But for years prior, Australian prime ministers, foreign ministers, defence ministers, ambassadors, diplomats and members of our defence forces knew of Senator McCain's commitment to the US-Australia relationship, made manifest through his stewardship and influence as chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, ensuring other US legislators would also devote time and attention to the US-Australia relationship.

McCain ran twice for President.

He was fiercely critical of Trump's performance during a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin following a July 2018 summit with the Russian leader in Helsinki, Finland.

Barack Obama, who beat Mr McCain to the White House in 2008, said they shared a "fidelity to something higher".

Obama said the two political opponents "saw our political battles, even, as a privilege, something noble, an opportunity to serve as stewards of those high ideals at home, and to advance them around the world". John McCain described the senator on "Fox & Friends" as a hero.

Before then, Mr McCain criticised the president's trade policies, and reiterated that "Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn't".

He was also a pilot in the U.S. Navy and was taken captive as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. In Hanoi, McCain is etched in the city's history, with a memorial at the lake where his plane crashed and at the prison - now a museum - where he was held captive.

In 1986, he ran for the Senate seat vacated by longtime Republican Sen.

"And the spirit that drove him was never extinguished: we are here to commit ourselves to something bigger than ourselves".

McCain is expected to be remembered in Arizona and Washington before being buried, likely this week, at the Naval Academy Cemetery on a peninsula overlooking the Severn River. McCain was one of five senators who received campaign contributions from Charles Keating Jr. and was later asked by Keating to prevent the government from seizing his Lincoln Savings and Loan Association. "When you hear cancer, a nuclear bomb goes off in your life". McCain said that upon capture he was struck, kicked, and bayoneted by several hundred Vietnamese before they were chased off by a nurse.

Pence, in a tweet on McCain's death, said: "Karen and I send our deepest condolences to Cindy and the entire McCain family on the passing of Senator John McCain".

Eight years later, here was a man who openly professed his love of money, who had avoided military service because of a foot problem he later said had healed itself, a man who bragged about greasing the wheels for his NY real estate empire by donating to both Democrats and Republicans, a man who, in short, unapologetically flouted the long-established traditions of American politics and the presidency. "He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the place he loved best".

"My father is gone, and I miss him as only an adoring daughter can", McCain concluded.

She said: "We lived in his light and warmth for so very long". "He loved me, and I loved him".
