  • Donald Trump, White House deny wrongdoing after Michael Cohen plea deal

On Tuesday, Trump's former personal lawyer and "fixer", Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to campaign-finance violations.

At a rally in West Virginia late Tuesday and on Twitter Wednesday, the president commended former campaign manager Paul Manafort, who was convicted in Virginia on fraud charges. How will this news affect the midterm elections in November? You know, they're still looking for collusion! Donald Trump had long claimed that the meeting was about Russian adoptions but recently admitted that his campaign team met in the interest of getting dirt on Clinton.

"I participated in this conduct, which on my part took place in Manhattan, for the principal objective of influencing the [2016] election", Cohen said. Trump denies the affairs.

Republicans have been near-silent on Trump's legal travails, but many seemed anxious about the impact on the elections. " Trump declined to answer questions on Cohen". Trump added in a tweet that is certain to raise speculation about whether the president might pardon Manafort at some point.

Under US election law, campaign contributions, defined as things of value given to a campaign to influence an election, must be disclosed.

That raised the question of whether Cohen would cooperate, and, crucially, what his cooperation would be worth.

"Michael [Avenatti, her lawyer] and I are vindicated and we look forward to the apologies from the people who claimed we were wrong", she said. In fact, prosecutors could choose to re-try Manafort on those counts if they wished.

"There is no allegation of any wrongdoing against the President in the government's charges against Mr. Cohen", Giuliani said in a statement. Prosecutors say Cohen even got a $60,000 bonus for his work trying to keep these women quiet during the election.

It's not clear if Trump broke the law and legal experts say it would be hard to prove in court.

Cohen, who pleaded guilty on Tuesday to helping President Trump pay hush money to two women, wants to tell Mueller that Trump knew of an infamous 2016 meeting at Trump Tower and the Russian hacking of Democratic institutions before they took place, Davis told MSNBC, deciding that any "attorney client" privilege in this case is strictly optional.

In April, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Cohen's New York City home and office.

"The odds of an investigation have definitely gone up", Garber said.

This might all be bluster.

If Cohen has relevant and weighty information for Mueller, then the special counsel could recommend a lighter sentence.

Paul Manafort in April. And that's just the beginning of Manafort's legal troubles. Manafort has another trial ahead, as well as a possible retrial for the ten counts for which the jury could not reach a consensus; Cohen is all but screaming that he has more to share. Now that Manafort will likely face serious jail time, will he?

He also tweeted: "Michael Cohen plead guilty to two counts of campaign finance violations that are not a crime".

When asked in April if he knew about a $130,000 payment made to Ms Daniels, Mr Trump said no.
