Measles sickens over 100 people in 21 states, including CT

"Missouri is one of the states where there have been cases of measles".

Symptoms of the virus show up in 10 to 14 days and last seven to 10 days. Of those, 338 were connected to a single large outbreak.

Measles, also known as rubeola, is a highly contagious, airborne virus that spreads through respiratory droplets, especially coughing and sneezing. In 2014, the United States experienced a record number of cases, with 667 cases from 27 states reported to the CDC.

The rash appears as red and blotchy marks on the hairline that travel down over several days, turning brown and eventually fading.

According to the CDC, some people may suffer from severe complications, such as pneumonia and brain swelling which could result in hospitalization or death. In 2015, 188 people contracted measles.

The measles are spreading in IL and other states in 2018.

The incidences of measles has dropped dramatically since the introduction of a live vaccine in 1963, the CDC said. Vaccination is now the only effective way to prevent measles.

Doctors said the best way to stay healthy is taking preventative measures like vaccinations, saying that measles is so contagious that all cases, whether it's 20 or 200, are watched closely. The CDC didn't say how many of those cases were in Kansas. The CDC says two doses of MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93% effective.
