Heightened concern spurred by the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Salisbury, England is prompting USA national security officials to consider seriously the prospect of a similar attack, current and former officials said.

The action is aimed at punishing President Vladimir Putin's government for having "used chemical or biological weapons in violation of global law", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

Earlier, the Kremlin said the new batch of sanctions on Moscow announced by the U.

The new sanctions, which officials say will take effect on or about August 22, target USA exports of national security goods to Russian Federation.

Existing sanctions already prohibit the export of most military and security-related items, but now the ban will be extended to goods, such as gas turbine engines, electronics and calibration equipment that were previously allowed on a case-by-case basis. "So linking these events is unacceptable to us, and just as with previous USA sanctions we believe are absolutely illegal and against global law", Peskov told reporters.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the new sanctions "categorically unacceptable" and "illegal". Russian Federation did not and does not have, and could not have, any connection to the use of chemical weapons.

"Vladimir Putin must know that we will not tolerate his deadly acts, or his ongoing attacks on our democratic process", Royce said.

A senior State Department official said Wednesday that there could be exceptions.

European countries and the United States have expelled 100 Russian diplomats since that attack, in the toughest action by Trump against Russia since he came to office.

British police reporteldy have identified multiple Russian suspects who left the country after the poisonings of Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in March in Salisbury, England, along with a police officer who responded to the scene. Dawn Sturgess later died while her partner, Charlie Rowley, spent three weeks recovering in hospital.

The actor will next be seen in Vincent D'Onofrio's western The Kid , and he also returns for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part . Perhaps things behind the scenes of Cowboy Ninja Viking have just been far more complicated than any of us laymen ever realized.

The U.S. joined Britain, France and Germany in condemning the attack and blaming Russian Federation for it earlier this year.

Nerve agent attack: What is Novichok?

London and its allies have accused Moscow of trying to kill the Skripals and says the two cases are likely linked.

Russian Federation has criticised the new U.S. sanctions as "draconian".

The action by the US State Department is the latest salvo in a series of disputes between the rival powers, and comes less than a month after US President Donald Trump met his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Helsinki.

Almost five months after Russia's nerve-agent attack on British soil, Washington this week finally came up with a meaningful response: major new sanctions on Vladimir Putin's regime.

Mr Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the United States move runs contrary to a "constructive" atmosphere at the Trump-Putin summit last month, and he strongly denied any Russian role in the poisoning in Britain. With these sanctions, the exports will be presumptively denied.

The Russian ruble plummeted to its lowest level against the dollar since 2016 on Thursday as Washington prepares to penalize Moscow for a chemical attack in the United Kingdom earlier this year.

As the Turkish lira sent tremors through the emerging markets by hitting all-time lows, analysts at Rosbank said the rouble was hit more by the situation in emerging markets than by concerns about new sanctions. Given that Russian Federation flatly denies involvement in the incident, it appears unlikely to accede to the U.S. demands. "Nothing has changed", he said. Rand Paul hand-delivered a letter from Mr. Trump to Putin, asking for "expanding dialogue".
