Three Palestinians were reported killed in early strikes, but the figure has not been updated in some time.

Hamas terrorists responded with a cross-border fusillade that sent Israelis scrambling for air raid shelters. The Air Force attacked a auto used by terrorists to launch rockets into southern Israel from the Strip.

Israel's military says it struck several Hamas targets in Gaza.

Hamas claimed responsibility for the mortar barrage, saying it came in response to the IDF's killing of its two operatives on Tuesday.

According to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-controlled enclave, Kammash and her daughter were killed in an airstrike in Jafarawi in central Gaza, the ministry said, while her husband was injured.

"The escalation of the barbaric shelling of Gaza and the deliberate targeting of civilians [by Israel] is premeditated and the [Israeli] occupation will suffer the repercussions and pay a higher price for its crimes", he said, according to the news service.

The Gaza Ministry of Health identified the slain Palestinians as Alaa Youssef Ghandour, 30, Einas Mohammed Khamash, 23, and her toddler daughter, Bayan.

In retaliation, Israeli jet fighters attacked more than 140 strategic targets in the Gaza strip where the Palestinian authorities reported that three people were killed. Middle East Eye could not immediately confirm either account of the events.

Israeli media reports said fire from the gunmen had apparently been part of a Hamas exercise and not directed at Israel.

Huge pillars of black and grey smoke were seen coming out from the al-Meshaal Centre for Culture. The UN has also urged both sides to come back from the brink. He said Israel has offered only an easing, but not an end, to the blockade.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense (MoD) released the first images of the coastal defense barrier that it is constructing in the sea on the country's maritime border with the Gaza Strip on 5 August.

"We have had another night of escalation and we are not seeing the end", he said.

"We are closer to a wide scale operation in Gaza than we've ever been".

"The way things continue to play out is significant".

The Israeli army earlier on Wednesday said Palestinians fired at least 36 rockets across the border.

"The grave threats facing the Palestinian cause require [inter-Palestinian] reconciliation and the immediate restoration of national unity by fully empowering the government in the Gaza Strip as called for by the Egypt-brokered agreement", he said.

The United Nations, he said, has engaged with Egypt in an "unprecedented effort" to avoid serious conflict, but cautioned that "the situation can rapidly deteriorate with devastating consequences for all people".

The Swedes were all activists from the "Ship to Gaza" group who were attempting to break Israel's blockade and bring supplies including medical equipment to Gaza, while the remaining five people on the boat included three crew members from Canada, France and Germany, and two British journalists.
