English golf received a significant boost today when their rising star Georgia Hall won the Ricoh Women's British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes after a titanic final day battle with Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum.

It started from the outset, with Hall instantly applying pressure thanks to a fine clutch putt to make birdie at the first and take a share of the lead.

The 97th-ranked player has yet to drop a shot in two straight rounds of 5-under 67 that will give her a one-stroke lead heading into the weekend at the year's fourth major.

Fittingly she did so with her father Wayne acting as her caddie, the former two-handicapper having named his daughter in honour of Nick Faldo's Masters triumph in Augusta, Georgia, in 1996.

After a solid first half of the year as an LPGA member, Hall earned her first top-10 finish at the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic last month, and she has now produced the finest performance of her career to win her maiden major title.

The way Hall kept her composure and kept producing the shots of her life down the stretch, there might be more to come.

Hall joined Laura Davies (four), Alison Nicholas and Stupples as women's major winners from England. It was my goal when I was nine to win the British Open.

Hall played safe in three-putting from distance to finish on 17-under 271.

Firefighters in California gain ground on deadly Carr Fire
Mr Veverka, 34, said: "Right now, it's pretty much guaranteed we'll go from fire to fire to fire, until everything is out". Jerry Brown said Wednesday that fires have become the new normal in California due in large part to the changing weather.

Phatlum closed in 70 to finish solo second. "I was so happy".

But Hall's most notable performance of a year ago was on her full Solheim Cup debut, winning two matches alongside Anna Nordqvist and taking the experienced Paul Creamer to the final hole of their hard-fought singles clash on the final day.

★ Now her Cinderella story is set to inspire other young sportspeople wanting to get a taste of world-class action. Hall nailed a 20-foot eagle putt on the final hole to spark wild celebrations, and they went on to humiliate South Africa's George Coetzee and Haydn Porteous 4-1.

"My long game wasn't quite on it today but my putter saved me and I'm just going to go out there and try to play every shot as it comes tomorrow". I've gotta go out there tomorrow and try to play my best and maybe be a little bit more aggressive than I had been going. Her previous best had been in a tie for 3rd in 2015.

Struggling to hold back the tears at the presentation, she said: "This is for you Grandad".

He closed with a 3-under 69 for a three-stroke victory in the PGA Tour Champions event that is being replaced by the PGA Tour's 3M Open.

Also the 2014 and 2015 victor at TPC Twin Cities, the 57-year-old Perry matched Hale Irwin's tournament record of three victories in the final edition of the event that started in 1993 at Bunker Hills.

A birdie at No. 10 put him three shots behind, but Johnson bogeyed the last hole for a 64 and shared third with Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark.
