The fires have spread rapidly in recent days to burn 283,800 acres of land - an area nearly the size of Los Angeles.

California Governor Jerry Brown said around 10,000 people had been evacuated in the areas surrounding the Mendocino Complex fire, which has destroyed 100 structures and threatens approximately 10,000 more.

Firefighters will have to deal with the heat and poor relatively humidity this week. The tweets puzzled not only the state officials, but also scientists, who said that Trump not only failed to address human-caused climate change but also seemed to confuse the completely separate issues of fire protection and water management. Another 12 homes and 14 structures have been damaged, too, and 9,300 homes and other buildings are still threatened by the inferno, officials say.

The San Antonio Fire Department said it is preparing to send a crew to Northern California to help first responders with the Carr Fire.

Meanwhile, more fires have been breaking out, adding to the mammoth workload of fire crews.

To understand the scale of these fires, consider that the smallest among them, 2014's Happy Camp Complex Fire, burned almost 210 square miles.

Police in Kearney, Missouri, say they've responded to a possible sighting of a missing University of Iowa student. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa at 1-800-452-1111.

Firefighters have gained significant momentum on the River Fire portion of the wildfire and will continue to work on containment efforts on the Ranch Fire throughout Tuesday.

The crews have been boosted by U.S. army personnel and more than 1,000 prisoners. They include 2,000 volunteer prison inmates, according to the California Department of Corrections.

At the same time, neither fire agencies nor firefighters have complained about a lack of water. Officials said it killed a Pacific Gas and Electric Co. employee Saturday in the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, bringing the death toll to seven. About three-quarters of the perimeter has been quiet recently, but it is still moving aggressively north, coming to within less than two miles of merging with the Ranch Fire to the north. Past research has led to better methods and tools for predicting fires and responding to them, and for reducing the risks to people and property.

On Sunday, Trump tweeted, "California wildfires are being magnified & made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren't allowing massive amount of readily available water to be properly utilized".

Deputy fire chief Mr Mclean dismissed Mr Trump's comments to United States media, saying firefighters had "plenty of water" to tackle these wildfires.

It's unclear whether Trump's call for tree clearing "to stop fire from spreading" referred to creating fire lines by felling trees (a common and effective firefighting strategy) or to the mistaken notion that cutting down the nation's forests is a good way to restore them to a healthier, more fire-resistant condition.
