The source also said that that prior to the apparent overdose, the singer was around people who didn't have her sobriety in mind. The star has struggled with substance misuse issues for several years and is reported to have recently relapsed.
She previously battled pancreatic cancer in private, telling the outlet that the public was unaware she was undergoing chemotherapy until she announced her recovery.
The actress passed away in her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family, according to the publicist, who did not provide a cause of death. I lost my hair, but I had attractive wigs.
Industry notables also expressed their appreciation for Rae and her role as the no-nonsense but gentle house mother on "The Facts of Life". In 1979, she was cast as the beloved Edna Garrett on the show The Facts of Life, and she stayed on until 1986 (the show was cancelled two years later).
Rae's extensive screen credits also include appearances in Bananas, ER, Pretty Little Liars, Boy Meets World and most recently, Ricki and the Flash. Rae left after its seventh year, however, explaining later, "I needed some time for the rest of my life".
She is survived by her son, Larry, her sister and three grandchildren. She was remembered fondly by her co-star Todd Bridges.
A reboot of The Facts of Life is in the early stages at Sony Pictures TV with production companies run by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jessica Biel circling the project.
