Maduro claimed the plotters had been planning to bomb the Miraflores presidential palace and other government buildings.

Last year, a rogue Venezuelan police officer hijacked a helicopter and fired at government buildings in what he said was an action against a dictator.

The foreign minister of Venezuela Jorge Arreaza said Sunday that the attack against President Nicolas Maduro a day earlier was a manifestation of frustration against the president and against those in positions of state.

Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez appeared on state television Sunday to denounce what he called a terrorist attack. Maduro and the other officials were unharmed. Dozens of soldiers standing in formation were seen to scatter shortly after the explosions occurred.

On Saturday, a policeman who requested anonymity told AFP that drones may have been released from a nearby apartment that suffered a fire after one exploded.

"The stampede of the military personnel, broadcast live, leaves the armed forces and the military top brass looking very bad", said Hebert Garcia Plaza, a former general and member of Maduro's administration who turned on the government.

Another resident apparently saw the same drone.

In a press statement, the ministry said it "strongly rejects" the accusation of Maduro, whose country has been in an escalating political crisis between the socialist government and the opposition. In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, stated "unequivocally" that the United States was not involved.

"It is contrary to military honour to keep in government those who not only have forgotten the Constitution, but who have also made public office an obscene way to get rich", the group said in a statement, which was passed to US-based opposition journalist Patricia Poleo, who read it on her YouTube channel.

He described it as "a crime of terrorism and assassination" and said that the "material and intellectual authors inside and outside the country" had been identified. And he said the attack's goal "is what USA imperialism is seeking" - "a Venezuela in conflict, in civil war".

At one point Saturday, Maduro asked Trump to arrest the "terrorists".

Trump's national security adviser John Bolton told "Fox News Sunday" that, "If the government of Venezuela has hard information that they want to present to us that would show a potential violation of USA criminal law, we'll take a serious look at it".
