Sales fell 4 per cent to 58.48 trillion won ($52.3 billion) while operating income advanced 6 per cent to 14.87 trillion won ($13.3 billion), in line with its earnings preview earlier this month.

Samsung Electronics' semiconductor division enjoyed record-high earnings in the second quarter of 2018, driven by robust demand for DRAM memory used in data center applications and NAND flash chips for high-capacity storage.

Samsung's chipmaking unit, which dominates the global market after the firm invested tens of billions of dollars to build and expand factories, provides chips for the company's own devices as well as those manufactured by competitors including Apple.

In addition to poor sales of the Galaxy S9, the company's profit was also hit by weak demand for flexible OLED panels and reduction in price and quantity of LCD panels.

Adding to its troubles, its vice-chairman Lee Jae-yong, scion of Samsung's founding family, was jailed previous year for his part in the sprawling corruption scandal that brought down former president Park Geun-hye.

Some analysts predict the company's operating profit for the next quarter may reach 17 trillion won on the back of continuing demand for semiconductors throughout the year.

Demand for smartphones and tablets is forecast to increase in the second half as the market enters a period of strong seasonality, but competition is seen intensifying as new smartphone models are released. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will be released on august 9.

As for the short term, Samsung said that competition would be greater during the second six months of 2018, as new models of smartphones are released, prompting it to launch its new Galaxy Note at an earlier time than normal.

Also, this news doesn't come free of implication: lunch dates from U.S. and European countries are usually closed to the date in which Samsung launches the new Galaxy Note in South Korea.

Samsung has been struggling with sales of its Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus (review) lately, but that is not the only business the Korean manufacturer has been involved in. Samsung Knox, the company's enterprise solution, will allow IT managers to tailor interface with their business needs. He also thinks Samsung could have a three-generation lead over its rival Apple Inc.'s iPhone when it comes to 5G technology, something that would also help its cause going forward.

According to a report from The Investors, Samsung plans to add high-end features like in-display fingerprint sensor and triple camera lens to its Galaxy A series of phones this year.

Samsung shares slid 0.3 percent by 0620 GMT, compared with the flat broader market .KS11 .
