  • The Latest: Schumer chides Trump for heated rhetoric on Iran

Earlier on Tuesday, Iran's armed forces chief of staff warned the U.S. of a robust reaction if it continued to threaten Iranian interests.

Trump's bellicose, all-caps challenge late Sunday to President Hassan Rouhani followed a speech by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in which he accused Iran's leadership of massive corruption and widespread rights abuses and urged Iranians to rise up in protest.

Rouhani's remarks on Wednesday were his first since Trump warned the Iranian leader of dire consequences for threatening the US.

"I withdrew the United States from the disgusting one-sided Iran nuclear deal", he said.

Trump said in a Sunday tweet that Iranian President Hasan Rouhani would "SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE", if he threatens the United States.

The rising tensions between the two countries comes after Mr Trump cancelled a much-criticised treaty his predecessor Barack Obama signed with Iran in 2015 to stop it developing nuclear weapons.

The White House says President Donald Trump's threatening tweet shows he's not going to tolerate critical rhetoric from Iran, but claims the USA leader isn't escalating tensions between the two countries.

"Their message is that the place is on the verge of overthrowing the Islamic Republic, which has been a claim for the last 40 years and that they, in particular, are the logical democratic, pluralistic replacement". We've been around for millennia & seen fall of empires, incl our own, which lasted more than the life of some countries.

After speaking with European officials about Trump's warnings, International Crisis Group president Rob Malley said diplomats on the continent were not "really taking it seriously".

A senior commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard was quoted in Iranian media saying "Iran will resist pressure from the enemies" and that Trump's threats against the country amounted to "psychological warfare", Reuters reported.

Democrats have expressed alarm about Trump's Iran bluster. Analysts say activists inside Iran see a connection between the global tensions and the worsening economics. He also pressured Trump to not interfere with his government.

"The US and Saudi Arabia and the Arab world with all their money and all their might could not dent Iran and the country was victorious in the long struggle, all alone they were able to take on the whole world at that time, so I don't know why Trump threatens a country like that", said the former lawmaker. They apparently have struck an informal deal under which, if Putin fails to keep the Iranians in check, Russian Federation will not object to Israeli strikes against Iranian military infrastructure in Syria.
