  • Pompeo accuses Iranian Supreme Leader of profiting from $95 billion hedge fund

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House on Monday blamed Iranian President Hassan Rouhani for inciting a war of words with President Donald Trump, who warned that verbal threats could escalate into military conflict with the U.S.

President Donald Trump tweeted out an all-caps threat to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday night, echoing the incendiary rhetoric he used against North Korea a year ago.

The local news outlet IRNA reports in a televised address, Mr Hassan said "Mr Trump, don't play with the lion's tail, this would only lead to regret".

He finished the tweet with "be cautious!"

The tweet signaled an immediate escalation of tensions between Washington and Tehran, and capped a weekend of angry tweets by the President on the Russian Federation investigation and the legal problems facing his former personal attorney, Michael Cohen.

"Judging by their vast wealth, they seem more concerned with riches than religion", he said. "This is really unsafe".

The back and forth between Trump and Rouhani also came as U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo delivered a speech in California on Sunday, in which he accused the country's leaders of corruption and urged European allies to join the pressure campaign against the Islamic Republic.

Pompeo branded Iran's leadership a "mafia" and promised U.S. backing to groups rebelling against the government, though did not name them.

Among the most startling allegations leveled by Pompeo, who served as Central Intelligence Agency director before becoming secretary of state, was that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has a personal hedge fund worth $95 billion.

Rouhani issued the statement to his country's diplomats, according to Iranian state media.

Some Iranians blamed the threat from Iran for causing the rial's collapse Monday, while others attributed the fall to Trump's tweet.

The other signatories to the deal have vowed to stand by the deal.

The deal with six world powers provided Iran with some relief from sanctions in return for curbs on its nuclear program.

A top commander in Iran's Revolutionary Guards said his words amounted to "psychological warfare".

Iranian Americans typically express a range of views on U.S. policy towards Iran.

Trump's tweet appears to take the rhetoric expressed by Pompeo a step further.

In his latest salvo, Trump tweeted late on Sunday that hostile threats from Iran could bring dire consequences.

"And the United States under President Trump will not stay silent either".

'They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen'.

In the case of North Korea, she notes, the crisis was declared over despite any nuclear weapons being dismantled. "By lodging personal attacks against Iran's supreme leader, making demands that no one believes Iran can fulfill, and hinting at regime change, the administration is making clear that military action is very much on the table".
