A woman who survived a deadly duck boat accident in Missouri on Thursday told a Fox-affiliated TV station in Indianapolis that the boat's captain told passengers "not to worry about grabbing life jackets".

Rader reported 11 were dead just after 11 p.m. Thursday.

"It's important that we find out for sure what events did occur", Governor Michael Parson said at a Friday morning news conference.

People pray next to a auto believed to belong to a victim of a last night's duck boat accident, Friday, July 20, 2018 in Branson, Mo.

Divers located the vessel, which came to rest on its wheels on the lakebed, and authorities planned to recover it later Friday. "Every time I see people on it, I think, why are you on them?" she told the Herald.

Twenty-nine passengers and two crew members were on the boat when it capsized.

"When they do sink, they drag the passenger down by virtue of the canopy", Goodman said.

The first boat's crew was able to pull two people from the waves, Cox said.

"All but one of the survivors stated that the canopy was an impediment to their escape", the report said.

In a short video taken by Malaske from a dock, the duck boat can be seen wallowing through the choppy, wind-whipped lake, with water only inches from its windows.

Gov. Mike Parson asked for prayers for first responders and for those involved in the incident. I was inspired by the stories I heard from some of those who were part of the rescue effort and tremendously encouraged by the strength of the family members of victims I met with today.

About 300 people gathered in the parking lot of Ride the Ducks of Branson and others mourned at a church, singing "Amazing Grace" at both locations.

The boat, he told United States media, "shouldn't have been in the water" due to the weather.

"They are lethal on the land and they are lethal on the water", he said. He said he was about to start CPR when an EMT arrived and took over. Two adults were in critical condition, and the others were treated for minor injuries, Brandei Clifton said.

Missouri meteorologist Steve Lindenberg told AFP a string of severe thunderstorms had barrelled through the area.

The duck boat that sank was one of two still operating during the storm, Rader said.

The weather turned bad for a group of tourists on a duck boat on Table Rock Lake near Branson, Missouri.

Rader said an off-duty sheriff's deputy working security for the boat company helped rescue people after the boat sank.

President Donald Trump also tweeted his condolences on Friday morning. The accident happened on Table Rock Lake in Branson, a tourist area famous for country music shows and other entertainment. An EF2 tornado that bounced through downtown Branson in 2012 destroyed dozens of buildings and injured about three dozen people, but killed no one. The captain of the duck boat survived, but the driver of the vehicle was among the fatalities, Rader said.

On May 1, 1999, 13 people died when the Miss Majestic duck boat sank on lake Hamilton near Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Safety advocates have sought improvements since the Arkansas deaths.
