Miscommunication Reigns After Trump's Meeting with Putin

  • Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen doesn't believe Russian election interference favored Trump

On Thursday Trump tweeted that he was looking forward to a second meeting with Putin.

Trump's administration has sought to control the damage from their private meeting and news conference Monday in Helsinki, where Trump astonished the world and drew sharp criticism at home by siding with Putin over USA intelligence agencies on Moscow's meddling in the 2016 election.

Then on Wednesday he said "no" when asked if Russian Federation was still targeting the USA -a statement directly contradicting Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats.

Putin unveiled the proposal in a joint press conference with Trump on Monday following their summit meeting in Helsinki, Finland. I think that anybody that thinks Vladimir Putin doesn't have his stamp on everything that happens in Russian is misinformed.

"I'm different than other presidents - I'm a deal-maker", Trump said at one point.

To Americans back home, particularly the opponents of Trump, the press conference gave them more fodder to criticize the U.S. president. "It is what it is", Coats said in a verbal shrug.

Five days after the Helsinki meeting, some US officials remained in the dark about what the leaders discussed in their two-hour, one-on-one session with only interpreters present.

Hours after Antonov spoke, the White House shot down the idea, saying the Trump administration "is not considering supporting" such a referendum. "We are ready for discussions on this subject", he said.

Subsequently, the judge dismissed an application filed by Haris seeking transfer of the case to another court during last week. The military, which has ruled Pakistan for about half its history since 1947, has denied interfering in modern-day politics.

The US president had initially described the proposal as an "incredible offer".

He said he still doesn't know what Trump discussed with Putin during the leaders' one-on-one meeting in Helsinki. He said he misspoke when he said be didn't believe Russian Federation was behind any cyber attack, only to backtrack again by saying it "could be other people also" who interfered with the election, CNN reports.

He clarified it a day later, claiming he should have said he didn't see any reason why it "wouldn't" be Russian Federation that meddled.

After the summit, when Trump said in a press conference that he accepted Putin's denial that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election, Coats issued an extraordinary statement rejecting that conclusion. Also taking their seats are from left, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, White House deputy chief of staff for communications Bill Shine, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.

Last month Trump appeared to leave the door open to the USA recognising the annexation.

The White House backtrack came just before the Senate voted overwhelmingly against the proposal. Democrats attempted to subpoena Trump's interpreter, Marina Gross, to learn what was discussed during the meeting, but the order was shut down by House Republicans on Thursday.

A White House meeting would be a dramatic extension of legitimacy to the Russian leader.

Trump also caused confusion when he appeared to tell reporters Russian Federation was not targeting the 2018 election with further cyberattacks; the White House claimed he was responding to a different question.
