Israel has said it wants to see Hamas stop launching flaming kites and balloons from Gaza as well as cease rocket and mortar fire and weekly violent protests at the border.

The new tank has a sensor system, which gives its commander a full view of the surroundings in his helmet, and can be equipped with a computer system based on artificial intelligence, the Israeli military said.

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, who holds little sway over Hamas, called for global intervention to prevent an escalation of the violence, his office said.

The tactic has become popular during the months-long Gaza border protests known as The Great March of Return, in which Israeli security forces have killed more than 140 Palestinians.

During this time, fires caused by incendiary helium balloons and kites launched by Palestinians in Gaza over the border have ravaged tracts of Israeli farmland.

"Hamas took a huge blow yesterday and through the Egyptians asked for a ceasefire", said a senior Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Israel has also further tightened its blockade of Gaza by closing the only goods crossing, suspending oil and gas deliveries.

"There has been no calm in Gaza for many, many decades", she said.

The army said "a terrorist squad shot" the soldier on the border with southern Gaza, without naming him.

The IDF jets launched "wide-scale" airstrikes at targets in the Gaza strip, killing a total of four Palestinians - one protester and three Hamas fighters - and injuring at least 120.

In response, the Israeli army said they struck 60 Hamas sites including weapon manufacturing sites, a drone warehouse and a military operations room.

"We reached [an agreement] to return to the previous state of calm between the [Israeli] occupation and the Palestinian factions", Barhoum said.

Overnight Saturday, Hamas and Israel agreed to a ceasefire after five people including an Israeli soldier were killed Friday.

Egyptian, Qatari and United Nations officials held contacts with Hamas and Israel in an effort to restore calm and prevent an upsurge in violence, Hamas official Taher Nono told Reuters.

Earlier at least four Palestinians were killed on Friday by Israeli forces near the Gaza-Israel fence, according to Gaza's Health Ministry officials.

Protest organizers say they are demanding the right to return to lands lost to Israel in the 1948 war of its foundation and for an Israeli-Egyptian blockade to ease.

Explosion is seen following an Israeli air strike in the southern Gaza Strip.

It was the second such ceasefire agreement between the parties in a week and came amid growing fears of a new war.

Last weekend saw the most severe exchange of fire between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza since a 2014 war, raising worries of another round of conflict.

Hamas deputy chief in Gaza Khalil Al-Hayya responded to the threat, saying the Palestinians would resist any Israeli aggression.
