After several balloons drifted into Israel Sunday, the military said it targeted the Hamas squad that had launched them from the northern Gaza Strip. There were no immediate reports of any casualties.

At the same time, Egypt announced that it would close the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Sinai.

The UN coordinator also called on the worldwide community "not to forget the people of Gaza, not to forget the Palestinians who have lived for generations without a state" and to work with the UN to chart "a political way forward".

The Israeli military has delivered its most punishing blow against Hamas since the 2014 war.

A senior Israeli defence official said: "Only the facts on the ground will dictate our further response". Now Gaza Palestinians are using birds to set fires in southern Israel. "We can not stand idle when we see two million Palestinians in Gaza living in such bad conditions as they do now".

"Yesterday we were on the brink of war, and it has taken the concerted efforts of everyone to make sure that we step back from confrontation", Mladenov said in Gaza.

"Just as we are now completing the blocking of the tunnels and as we took action and succeeded in stopping the mass storming of the fences, I have directed the IDF to defeat and stop the terror of incendiary kites and balloons, and we are in the midst of the process", he said. "The Israeli sanctions further intensify the seize of Gaza and represent crimes against our people".

Fuel deliveries will be suspended until Sunday, the ministry said in a statement.

"We are not in a (military) operation".

Israel strikes Gaza militant sites, Palestinians fire rockets

The same day, around 200 rockets and mortars were fired at Israel from the Hamas-run enclave and four Israelis were wounded when a rocket hit a house in the nearby Israeli city of Sderot.

"People's life (in Gaza) has become more hard as people have limited money, the economy has collapsed, electricity and water are scarce", he said. Around 10 other passers-by were wounded, the officials said.

"For a hundred years we have been fighting terrorism, fighting it with force".

A total of 14,811 Palestinians also sustained injuries, of whom 366 are reportedly in a critical condition.

"The strike was in response to the arson attacks perpetrated by Hamas against Israeli civilians and Israeli sovereignty", the statement read. "Bombardment for bombardment", he said.

Israeli occupation troops killed 137 Palestinians since protests broke out on March 30.

Israel says the Islamist group is using the demonstrations as a cover to carry out attacks on Israeli border communities.

The political activist also highlighted the obstacles that the deal of the century will face, pointing to Palestine's fierce opposition to the initiative, the Syrian army's success to retake more areas from terrorists, the "March of Return" protests by Palestinians, and the strengthened role of resistance in Palestine. Increasing Zionist movements cannot change the equation or impose a new reality or stop the Palestinian Great March of Return.
