Fred Waller, patrol chief of the Chicago police, told the New York Times and other media, that officers saw a bulge in his pants that they believed to be a gun. Officers approached the man, who became combative and tried to push the officers' hands away.

Police recovered a weapon at the scene but the man did not fire his gun at officers, Waller said.

At some point during the confrontation, the unidentified man was shot, police said. Guglielmi said the shooting was captured on the officer's body camera. "Several arrests were made", Chief Waller said.

The shot man's identity has not yet been released but he is thought to have been aged in his 30s, local media reported.

The shooting took place in the predominantly African-American South Shore neighborhood on Chicago's South Side, fire department spokesman Larry Merritt told The Associated Press.

After nightfall, protesters continued to mill around the neighbourhood with police occasionally chasing them away. The officer has not been identified.

In a statement, the city's Civilian Office of Police Accountability said it's committed to a thorough, objective and unbiased investigation of the shooting.

The man was pronounced dead at Jackson Park Hospital, according to officials. None of the officers were injured.

Furthermore, Imran also advised his own party workers to show patience upon Nawaz's return to the country. A police official who asked not to be identified said more than 100 PML-N workers had been detained.

Just hours after the shooting, the Chicago Police Department released a preliminary statement about the shooting saying the officer who fired the shots would be "placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days".

Protesters accused the police of being "murderers". At least 80 law enforcement officers responded to the protest, according to Chicago Sun-Times reporter Nader Issa.

Protesters sparred with Chicago police officers following a deadly shooting on Saturday, July 13, 2018.

Police then moved in wielding batons to stop them.

"An argument started and officers hit protesters with batons, and protesters returned punches", Issa tweeted.

Watch video of the scene below. Three years later, three officers were indicted on felony charges for allegedly conspiring to cover up the shooting. The police have claimed that the violence was in response to protestors throwing bottles and rocks, although as of yet there is no video footage to back this up. Four of the protesters have been arrested.

"There were some members of the community who were upset, " Guglielmi told the newspaper.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted that four protesters were arrested.
