Several Teams Had 'No Cousins' Free Agency Policy Even Before Achilles Injury

The 2018 National Basketball Association free agency continues to get crazier by the day as the Golden State Warriors made a decision to join in on the fun.

Late Monday, the defending National Basketball Association champions boosted their odds of winning it all once again by adding talented free-agent center DeMarcus Cousins on a one-year, $5.3 million deal.

Cousins became one of eight players in history to average at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists in a season.

Cousins' best career game came on January 22, 2018 against the Chicago Bulls. The 6-foot-10, 270- pound center will join fellow All-Stars Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green on a team that will be heavily favorited to return to the NBA Finals for the fifth year in a row.

A healthy Cousins in the lineup would nearly certainly mean the Warriors improve on last year's performance, too, which included 58 regular-season wins and their second straight title that was capped with a sweep of LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

But prior to this stunning free agency move, the new season was gearing up to be one of the most competitive and unpredictable for a long time.

Eleven members of a family found dead in house in India's capital
Reportedly, one person is behind the murders of 10 other family members, who later hanged self too. At least some of them were blindfolded, gagged or had their hands and legs tied up.

By the time of their elimination - at the hands of the Warriors, naturally - the Pelicans had already explored the idea of offering Cousins a two-year deal at well below the maximum salary, sources told ESPN.com in May. The 27-year-old Cousins played in New Orleans for coach Alvin Gentry, a top assistant for Steve Kerr when the Golden State won the 2015 championship - the franchise's first title in 40 years - and still a close friend and confidant of Golden State's head coach.

In other words, even with nearly four months to go before the regular season begins, it already appears to be game over for the rest of the league. It's unclear when Cousins will return, if he'll return at all this season.

In terms of his health going forward, it's really important to keep in mind the severity of an Achilles injury like this one.

The Warriors couldn't give Cousins the contract he wanted, but they could offer most everything else.

The Houston Rockets would hope the duo of Chris Paul and James Harden can continue to shine in the second year together and a similar scenario will likely take place with the Oklahoma City Thunder with Paul George, Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony.
