  • Apple just released the first iOS 12 beta to everyone

This is your opportunity to get a glimpse of the future of iOS.

Anyone can now try out the early version of Apple's iOS 12, after the company released a test of the operating system to the public.

The beta is now available to download. But don't forget, it's a beta.

Apple has released the public beta of iOS 12, macOS Mojave, and tvOS 12. Rinse and repeat every time you want to jump back to a stable iOS version from a beta release. Former Android users tend to gravitate either to Apple's largest Plus phones or to its older and less expensive models, while prior iPhone customers more commonly treat themselves to newer and more deluxe devices. But as a beta, the software will be a little buggy.

Because she was so distracted, Vasquez missed the chance to see Herzberg and take evasive action, investigators concluded. She told NTSB investigators she was monitoring the self-driving system's interface.

But remember, you shouldn't install an iOS beta on your primary iPhone or iPad. In some rare cases, beta software can also brick your device and make it unusable. The new software includes a feature called Screen Time, which will give you a detailed breakdown of how much time you're spending on your iPhone or iPad and over what apps. The final iOS 12 comes out this September, so we're going to have plenty of beta testing until then.

To get access to the first iOS 12 public beta, you need to enrol in the Apple Beta Software Program with your Apple ID. Reboot your device, then head over to the Settings app.

Another new addition to scanning QR codes in iOS 12 is the yellow highlight frame shown below. Of note, Siri Shortcuts, arguably one of the most useful features of iOS 12, is absent. You can see the full list of changes from ZDNet's round up here.

With iOS 12, you can expect faster and responsive performance, better notification management, screen time tracking, support for up to 32 people on FaceTime and better privacy features on Safari. You also can turn on Do Not Disturb when you're in a meeting, for a few hours or for longer. Developers will be able to take advantage of a new file format for augmented reality and new features in ARKit 2.0.
