The online backlash to the account locking has only gotten worse since news got out and Sony, for their part, haven't exactly handled the situation well, releasing a statement that can only be described as tone-deaf.
Epic Games has also allowed for a collection of "cross-play" options between platforms, with Xbox players being able to team up with those on PC and a variety of other examples, however, users on PlayStation have only been able to play with or against those on PC. It was understood that cross-play on the PS4 version of Fortnite would be limited to PC, Mac, iOS, and Android, but nothing was said about not being able to use your account on the Switch.
Later in the week, Sony got into hot water when numerous the 2+ million people who downloaded "Fortnite" for the Nintendo Switch in its first 24 hours of availability found they couldn't play on both a PlayStation 4 and the Switch, and would have to choose one or the other - at least, if they wanted to keep their purchased items. Sony, it's worth noting, doesn't accept responsibility for locked-out Epic Games accounts, but when those logins work across every other platform as long as you haven't used it on PS4, it's pretty easy to guess who is responsible here.
Things are heating up at Sony after the company was forced to respond to fan anger at the lack of Fortnite cross-play between the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, as revealed at this year's E3 gaming expo. Unfortunately, that doesn't help the 2 million people that downloaded Fortnite on the Switch in it first 24 hours of release. Not allowing me to sign-in to Fortnite Switch with my Epic account because it's linked to PS4 is tone deaf and points more to fear than market dominance.
But this statement from Sony echoes what Shawn Layden told me when I spoke with him at a PlayStation event at last E3. We'll bring you more news on the subject as it unfolds.
The popular video game "Fortnite" has finally arrived on the Nintendo Switch, but not without some controversy. However since that time the headline has turned into Sony backlash in a very unusual case that all but erases the PlayStation 4's "for the players" tagline. "And that's a decision that each of them are making, and some are supporting cross-play and some are not". "I wish people could get to play together".
